Jully Black

Toronto’s own, JULLY BLACK got things started with her “touch the stratosphere” energy! Younge/Dundas Square was jammed to capacity, with row upon row of overflow filling the sidewalk in front of the Eaton Center. “I see you over there by H&M,” she assured the people across the street.

Her set was fun, mesmerizing, and inspiring. The theme of her performance was about spreading love, believing in self, and being good to each other. “Never listen to anyone tell you, ‘you can’t.’” Listening to Jully sing “Seven Day Fool” “Until I stay” “Queen” & “Running,” will get you moving, yet, seeing her perform these songs live is an experience everybody should have once in life.

PhotobucketVocally her range is wide and flawless. The emotion behind every word is felt. Her sincerity and interaction with the crowd makes you forget you are in a sea of people. The band and back up vocalists were flawless. Jully was perfection as she brought her set to a close punching “through the Glass Ceiling,” while an estimated 1500 – 2000 people joined with fists in the air. “When I say peace, you say love…” “…Peace ~ Love” over and over, is the chant that filled the downtown core as Black surrendered the stage. Head over to http://www.jullyblack.com/ and get acquainted with this phenomenal performer!

SASS JORDAN

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it until I leave this earth: Sass Jordan delivers one of the best live rock shows on the planet! She’s been kickin’ ass and taking names for 30 years and is as spot on today as she was when I saw her for the first time 22 years ago. Jully Black is a tough act to follow. Sass didn’t just follow… she kept the energy of the night going and took it from pop, dance, R&B, to blow the doors off the hinges Rock~N~Roll!

There’s a reason Sass has shared the stage with, Kiss, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones etc and has sold a million records world wide. That reason: Her voice! She hits notes I didn’t even know existed. Forget the auto-tune pop-divas on the radio; Sass has pitch perfect vocals. She could out-sing those gals with her mouth duct taped shut!

Photobucket

PhotobucketSass and the band played through some of her impressive roster of songs. Older hits and tracks from the new, classic 70’s rock inspired, “From Dusk Till Dawn.” Which includes the awesome track, “Do What Ya Want.” During “I Want To Believe” the audience sang along with every chorus (some of us to every word). With hits like, “So Hard,” and “Make You A Believer.” The place went ballistic! The band was airtight and bang on with every note. Sass was joined by: Colleen Allen and Carrie Chesnutt a.k.a. “The Sassettes” on sax and harmonies.

Be sure to pop in on Sass at http://www.sassjordan.com/ and buy a copy of “From Dusk Till Dawn.”

MELANIE FIONA

Toronto native Melanie Fiona rounded out the night with a return to some high voltage pop, R&B, dance music. Melanie is currently on tour with Alicia Keys but took a break to come home for the DIVA night!

She started the set with her hits “Bang Bang” and “Give It To Me Right.” She and her backup dancers/vocalists put on a performance reminiscent of the “Ike & Tina Review.” Those ladies were on fire! The band accompanying Melanie was as flawless as all the musicians on stage, before them.

PhotobucketThe refreshing thing about Melanie: The GAL can actually sing! In this new generation of manufactured acts and tweaked sound, it is difficult to know WHO, of this new generation of performers, actually has the chops to play LIVE in front of a live audience. I didn’t know what to expect outside of the videos and radio but within 10 seconds of her first song, I was giving props! If you are not familiar with Melanie’s music, treat yourself right away: http://www.melaniefiona.com/

PhotobucketLuminato Festival Toronto 2010 runs until June 20th, there are still tickets available to many of the arts and creativity events, as well as more free events. For all the details head to the official Luminato site: http://www.luminato.com/2010/

Jeffery Straker ~ The Interview

Photobucket

Saskatchewan-raised, Jeffery Straker, is a creative, charming and intelligent, singer-songwriter-pianist. He plays 100+ shows per year and is a man who oozes determination. He has performed around the globe, including gigs in: Ireland, China, New York City, and Panama (with the Canadian Embassy).

The love of piano began when he was 6 years old. In addition to piano lessons, Jeffery played by ear, and made things up as he went along. At age 19, Jeffery earned a degree in piano performance from England’s Trinity College of Music (He also holds a degree in plant biology/biochemistry).

While studying at the University of Regina’s conservatory of music, he worked with Frank Crumly, who was taught by Thomas Manshardt, who was taught by Howard Wells, who was a student of Leschetizky, who was taught by Czerny, who was taught by Beethoven. A similar line: via Manshardt connects Jeffery to Chopin. Not too shabby a lineup to be part of!

He began writing music in a serious manner 9 years ago. The originality of his songs can be attributed to the traditional, classical, and pop influences that have shaped Jeffery’s style.

Jeffery has been recognized for his talent by numerous industry organizations. In 2008 he was nominated for the Toronto Independent Music Awards – best pop album. In 2009 Jeffery was a finalist for Radiostar National Songwriting Competition, a top 20 finalist in the global Unisong Competition, and made top 10 in the prestigious US Mountain Stage newsong contest.

He is a favorite on CBC Radio (who have aired live broadcasts of his concerts). His independently produced video “Hypnotized” climbed to the Much More Music Top 10 (#6). He’s presently doing a collaborative tour with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, has opened for Mel C, and has landed a distribution deal with Universal Music/Conveyor Canada.

“Rufus Wainwright, as well as k.d. Lang are among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music. Add the name Jeffery Straker to that list” ~ Chicago Free Press

Jeffery is currently touring his third CD, “Step Right Up,” which was co-produced by Justin Gray (Joss Stone, Jacksoul) and features drummer Randy Cook (Five For Fighting, Chantal Kreviazuk and Kelly Clarkson) and guitarist Justin Abedin (Amanda Marshall, Jacksoul).

*NOTE ~ The video quality is not the best, apologies. With my computer still out for repair, I had to use an OLD computer to edit. It did not allow for cleaning up the images and some of the sync is off. Also – the interview portion squished the frames to fit a “wide” screen… Jeffery and I are not that short and wide. I’m wide… just not that wide. I hope to replace these videos with better versions soon!

FUTURE SHOP: ROUND TWO ~ The BULLSHIT Continues!

Photobucket
Some of you may have read my previous post about the HORRENDOUS customer service I received from Future shop in February (Younge/Dundas location – Toronto). Well, in that situation, after my post, and some Twitter outrage/re-tweets, Future shop’s customer service representative contacted me and “made it right.” Unfortunately that “service” took 29 days and a detailed post here at The Thought Vox.
Photobucket

Here we are in May 2010: I brought my MacBook Pro back to Future shop due to the CD Drive not functioning properly, the face plate lifting in 3 places (which happened AFTER they reseated the keyboard last time), and a “dead pixel” (white spot) appeared on the LCD screen.

I dropped the computer off on Sunday May 16th, told the head of the repair department about the issues, and reminded him that EVEN though I was told my computer had left the store within 24 hours in February, it had, IN FACT, sat there, ignored for 17 days. This, after being told twice it was with Apple Repair. One of these lies was told while looking me in the eye: on DAY 7 – after the repair department employee checked the computer and SAW my machine had NOT left the store. To the manager’s credit – only 5 days have passed this time and the machine has been looked at (but, that is where the service ends).

Here’s today’s issue: they agree that the faceplate and malfunctioning CD Drive are Warranty repairs and I will not be charged. However, the dead pixel has now become a “pressure point” caused by ME pressing the screen, in that area, with a great deal of force (TOTAL BULL SHIT).

When I called the store and spoke to the Repair Department Manager on May 15th, and told him of the issues, re: the screen issue, he said, “Sounds like a pressure point,” without EVEN seeing the machine. I told him that I have NEVER squeezed, poked, or mishandled the screen. He said, “ok bring it in and we’ll look at it.”

When I brought the machine in on May 16th, AGAIN: he said, “looks like a pressure point,” after glancing at the machine. I repeated that I DON’T mishandle my computer. He said, “Lets see what repair says.” I think we ALL know where this is going…

PhotobucketWhen we spoke today I was told they would fix the “Pressure Point” for $700.00 and I should get the machine back in 10 – 15 days. I told him that was, “a crock of shit. The machine is faulty, and you are not honoring the warranty I paid $400 for. Fix the other problems and get me my machine. 10 – 15 days MORE is unacceptable after all the bullshit I’ve put up with in two visits!”

He replied, “Perhaps you should take this up at the store level.”

I was very rude on the phone. I am NOT a rude person, but enough is enough! There is ALWAYS another department “we” need to contact on each “issue.” Customer Service is nonexistent in MOST stores today. There is buck passing and bullshit ~ but little in the way of owning responsibility. Before hanging up, I told him “you guys didn’t enjoy my last web post, wait till you see the next.”

I’ve taken a few hours visiting technical sites on the web. Looking for explanations and illustrations of “Pressure Points” and “Dead Pixels.” Here’s the crux of the problem: They pretty well LOOK THE SAME. So don’t EVER expect a warranty to cover legitimate dead pixels. There seems to be NO way to distinguish what caused either: basically if it happens to your computer/TV/PDA you are FUCKED! It doesn’t matter that you have shopped exclusively with them for more than a decade or have brought them $35,000.00 worth of referral business in ONE year! When it comes time for shit to get fixed, stores will ONLY fix what they can’t get out of fixing!

If your LCD screen has a stuck or dead pixel (a point on the screen that is always lit or always dark), it is usually due to a transistor malfunction or uneven distribution of liquid in the liquid crystal display (TFT LCD). This can often be fixed. ~ wikihow

I took the liberty of taking photos and video of my computer BEFORE taking it to Future shop on May 16th. Lets compare a photo of my machine and a “dead pixel” photo from a tech site. I will go over my machine with a fine-tooth-comb when I get it back and if there is ONE mark that wasn’t there previously, I will make a lovely video montage for YouTube.Photobucket
PhotobucketAt this point I’m pretty sure that if the ENTIRE screen were to go white, it will be because I LOOKED AT IT TOO HARD!

Save your cash – don’t bother with an expensive extended warranty. EVERYTHING that has been fixed on my machine has been covered under Manufacture’s Warranty. So what is this EXTENDED bullshit about covering what the Manufacture’s Warranty doesn’t cover? I may as well have sat fire to a stack of $20’s as given $400 to Future shop FOR NOTHING!

In Future I will NOT buy another thing from Future shop or ANY of their affiliated stores.
Following February’s bullshit disrespect, they BEGGED that I give them another chance to be “My Electronics Store.” Well, kids, you got your second chance and you BLEW IT ALL TO FUCK!

BUYER BEWARE!

Photobucket2008 Canadian Idol winner, Theo Tams hails from Coaldale, Alberta. The singer-pianist will be showcasing songs from his debut record, “Give It All Away,” on May 25th at Hugh’s Room.

Theo, a self-taught, pianist, is presently learning guitar with a goal to one day play the cello. The University of Lethbridge student never dreamed of a career in music until his stint on “Canadian Idol.”

“You proved without a doubt you’re probably the best male vocalist we’ve ever had on this show!” ~ Canadian Idol Judge Zack Werner

Shying away from the usual rush to release an album following an Idol win, Theo was very involved in the creation of this record and took the time to produce a project that was true to heart. He was given the opportunity collaborate with some of Canada’s most talented songwriters, including: Hawksley Workman, Dahmnait Doyle, Simon Wilcox, Rob Wells and Greg Johnston. A highlight was that Sarah Slean (one of Theo’s musical idols) co-wrote the song ‘Let Go’ (w/Greg Johnston) for the album. He has been busy touring as well as making appearances at charity events for organizations such as “Free The Children.”

There have been numerous requests that Theo revisit his “Idol” cover of (fellow Albertan) Jann Arden’s, “Good Mother,” at the Hugh’s gig. You’ll have to be there to find out if he does!
