Sass Jordan ~ from Dusk ’til Dawn ~

Sass Jordan played to a full house at Hugh’s Room (Toronto, Sept 12th 2009), in support of her Sept 15th release: “from Dusk ’til Dawn” The night showcased tracks from the new CD as well as many hits from her lengthy catalogue of music.
Over the past thirty years Sass has spent much of her time being creative. Her career has included eight albums, award winning songs, a stint as Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway hit “Love Janice,” roles on mainstream TV shows, a part in “The Vagina Monologues,” a judge on “Canadian Idol,” and duet with Joe Cocker on one of the biggest selling soundtracks of all time (The Bodyguard). She has shared the stage with rock-n-roll icons, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Carlos Santana, Joe Cocker, AC-DC, and The Rolling Stones, just to name a few.
The new album is more laid back then some of Sass’s previous works. The vibe is reminiscent of classic rock, with a twist of blues, soul, and country. The tracks run the gamut of emotions and deliver a quality listening experience throughout.
My personal favorite song is “Awake.” It’s about the feelings/thoughts that take hold in the wee hours, when a relationship is falling apart.

“The title of the CD comes from me wanting to write about that time of day when things are most uncertain, in a state of potentiality, right before the night manifests, with all it’s accompanying fear, passion, quiet, loneliness, dread, and dreams…. It’s the time we seem to be the most vulnerable emotionally, and as an artist, that time is very interesting to explore.”
~ Sass Jordan
I remember vividly the first time I had the pleasure of seeing Sass live. She was touring her 1988 record, “Tell Somebody,” and to my absolute delight, a show was booked at “The Regent Lounge” (Summerside, P.E.I.).
“The Regent” was our local rock/dance club. Capacity was 500 people. The night Sass Jordan hit town the joint was jammed to the rafters. Rumor had it that there were 700+ people in attendance; and that the Fire Marshall walked in, took one look around, and left town for the night. It remains, to this day, over two decades later, one of the best rock shows I’ve ever seen; and I’ve seen hundreds.
I’ve seen Sass, perform live, several times over the years and she always delivers a phenomenal show. Her CD Release at Hugh’s Room was no exception! Sharing the stage with a team of talented musicians (Emm Gryner, Michael Borkosky, Derek Sharp, Charles Cooley , & Chris Caddell – Opening act: Oliver Pigott) the night was flawless. Each musician is well respected and comes with lengthy lists of individual success. The best of the best got together and gave the crowd a night to remember. One of the highlights was a five-part-harmony cover of the Tom Waits hit, “Ol’ 55.” The evening came to a close with multiple standing ovations and 200 people who weren’t ready for the night to end.

It was my distinct pleasure to be granted the opportunity to photograph the show. Sass is as gracious/funny off stage as she is on! It is my sincere hope that you all will take some time to check out her websites and PURCHASE “from Dusk ‘til Dawn.” When people steal music they are silencing future music. Please support the arts.

I was at the show and also bought the new CD. Thanks for the great review and fabulous photos, but thought I should tell you that the drummer that night was Charlie Cooley, not Jorn Andersen.

Great post and great pics, Sass gets even hotter as the years go by. Just wondering if you could post the entire set list for those that weren’t as lucky as you to be there! Thanks.

Hi Markus,
Unfortunately I didn’t take down the entire set list. I was busy taking photos. She has a gig at Massey Hall in November, maybe you can catch her there
