The Topp Twins ~ Untouchable Girls ~

A Must See Film About Life, Human Rights, Humor, & The Bond of Sisters

PhotobucketWhen I sat down at the North American premier of the Topp Twins documentary (TIFF -Toronto International Film Festival) I knew I was in for some laughs. After all, singing, dancing, yodeling lesbian twins are not something one trips over every day. I left the theatre having experienced far more than just humor.

Jools and Lynda Topp are sisters who inspire one to find joy in everything. The ladies were born in New Zealand (1958). They grew up on the family dairy farm and loved everything that entailed. The pair is naturally funny and gravitated to performing in their teens, after a stint in the army. Over time their country-singing duo morphed into an array of memorable characters. For over 25 years this national treasure has been delighting audiences worldwide.

“We never question our link (to each other). We always make something fun, because it’s not a career, it’s a lifestyle!” ~ Jools Topp

“We’re not really comedians; we’re singers that are funny!” ~ Lynda Topp

In addition to being funny, the Topps have always spoken up for human rights, marching against apartheid, sexual discrimination, and for the nuclear disarmament of NZ.

The film includes footage dating back to childhood, protest footage, performance footage, and candid interviews with the people who know them best. It is a lesson in NZ history, politics, family, funny, and love.

PhotobucketThe undying love between Jools and Lynda was paramount in getting Jools through her battle with breast cancer. Within seconds of the footage about the cancer struggle I was in tears. By this point in the film I was so endeared to the sisters, I was devastated.

Following the premier the Topps took the stage for a Q & A session. I’m delighted to report that Jools is healthy and strong today. Later in the evening they performed a rousing concert at Dundas Square. The event was interactive, whether the crowd wanted to participate or not. I laughed till I cried and I was not alone.

I recommend you all visit their site http://topptwins.com/, buy their DVDs, and see the movie. Be warned, these ladies have serious potty mouth, which makes them even more lovable. There’s something about a kiwi accent!
