There are many great things about working in a bookstore. The best is discussing books and writers with coworkers and customers.
I read Lisa Genova’s haunting, yet beautiful, “Still Alice,” while it adorned the best-seller list. I was moved to tears and also uplifted, by this story of a Harvard professor, stricken with early Alzheimer’s disease at age 50. Anyone who has read the award-winning novel knows exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t read “Still Alice,” it should be on your reading list.
Life got busy and I didn’t get around to reading Genova’s latest bestselling novel, “Left Neglected,” until now.
“Left Neglected” is a story of loss and change: it’s about a strong, independent, intelligent, woman whose life is completely altered in a matter of seconds. “Sarah Nikerson” is a successful, career driven, mother of three, who thrives on multi-tasking. She has it all… Until one careless, preoccupied, moment changes everything. Following that, half of her world disappeared. Sara had two choices: give up or fight back.
While I didn’t experience the same circumstances as “Sarah,” I did experience a similar incident, which changed every aspect of my life. Our bodies are brilliant but fragile machines; when they’ve reached their threshold – they will stop. At that point its up to spirit and mind to maneuver forward: positively or negatively – it becomes a matter of choice to overcome the physical.
“Sarah,” had decisions to make and in the end she found that silver linings and blessings can come from the worst situations. I also learned the same lesson during my physical disability, following a car accident. Anyone who has persevered in the face of adversity can relate to “Left Neglected.” It is a reaffirming piece of fiction. I highly recommend you pick up, Left Neglected and Still Alice!
