Gold ~ Chris Cleave

Gold is not the sort of book I gravitate towards. As much as I enjoy watching some live sporting events, I’m not usually inclined to read “sports” stories. I’m glad I made an exception with this book.

Gold is the story of three Olympic-class athletes and their lives dedicated to the quest for the top honor. Zoe and Kate met at age 19, while entering elite training. From the start they were destined to be friends, sisters, rivals: both in sport and in love. Jack, also a member of elite training, is the third corner to this triangle. The story covers three lifetimes of determination and setbacks. The culmination of wins, losses, and emotional baggage, bring our characters to the end of their Olympic roads. Each, in their 32nd year, each striving for one last shot at gold in London 2012.

More than just a story about athletics, Gold is a tale of betrayal, despair, limits, emptiness, triumph, support, and hope. It’s a story about growing up and real life challenges that interrupt well thought out plans. It’s about following dreams and facing death and defeat.

In the eleventh hour, what would any of us sacrifice for those we love? How much would we be willing to give up for the betterment of another? These are the questions all three of our main characters must answer.

There was a twist or two I didn’t expect, as well as an outcome that wasn’t what I had assumed. If you’re a fan of sports: Gold is for you! If you’re a fan of stories about life, sacrifice and triumph: This one is for you!
