Dearest, Fat Cat Haters…

Well, what a surprise when my friend Lucy, in Ireland, sent me a link of a photo of my cat, Beanie, that was taken in Toronto.

I must say, I laughed hysterically at most of the comments. My favorite being: “Bring me Solo, and the wookie.” There is also no shortage of comments about the animal abuse involved in allowing a pet to get so fat; some comments were more ignorant then others. So be it… This is a world of free thought and everyone has the right to be wrong. {link to site: http://imgur.com/gallery/J8hPE}

A few facts about Beanie (delivered in a kind tone):

She was born in Grand River, Prince Edward Island, July 1st 2003. (She is almost 10 years old today.) At 6 weeks old she flew in the cabin of an aircraft, to Toronto, Ontario, where she lived for 7.5 years (in very expensive/nice apartments). Following that she relocated to British Columbia for 1 year, where she lived in a nice house, surrounded by people who loved her. She has been living back in PEI, for about a year now.

In her lifetime she has always been a house cat. When she was born she was tiny (the runt of the litter) and she remained underweight until the time came to get her fixed. After being spayed, she continually gained weight. Which occurs in some female cats. During her life she has had a continuing weight problem, as well as a urinary issue, (highly concentrated urine,) which is unrelated to weight. Beanie easily develops crystals in her urine, which takes $$medication and a special diet to correct. Unfortunately, the vet food that balances her crystals is not a low fat food. When her urinary tract is clear, she gets switched back to special diet food… until, of course, there is another urinary inflammation. It costs approximately $600per year to feed 23lb Beanie. The manufacturer of both of her special foods was sorry to hear that Beanie gained weight on both of their foods, but said, “It happens sometimes.” Beanie NEVER gets treats or table food. She is fed a measured half-cup of food twice a day and water. That’s it. My other cat, also a spayed female, Binky, weighs 8 lbs and she doesn’t eat any more or less than Beanie.

Beanie purrs constantly and loves attention when she wants it. Otherwise she is a diva. She can run fast and meanders when that’s what she feels like. She sometimes has grooming issues due to her size, so I help her wash and keep her brushed. If ever she were in pain or ill I would have her put down. She is taken to the vet when any health issues arise. As of 3 months ago, when she had full x-rays and blood work, her vitals were perfect, her lungs clear, and her kidneys functioning perfectly. She did have another urinary inflammation, but it has cleared up with medication and another food change. Aside from the cost of special food and litter, Beanie has cost approximately $8000.00 in uninsured vet bills in her lifetime. She is worth every penny I’ve paid, because she is happy and cuddly and a joy to love. Everyone who meets Beanie likes her. Though she seems more partial to boys.

I am glad that so many people are outraged by animal abuse. As am I. To hurt or neglect a defenseless animal is the act of a coward. However, people should be careful about jumping to conclusions. Just because a pet is overweight, it doesn’t mean they are being overfed or abused. Hormones in animals, as in humans, alter the body in ways that are difficult to regulate. I have loved and nurtured animals for 4+ decades and I will for all my days on earth.

To all of you who have been brought a laugh or a smile from images of Beanie, I am so glad! Thanks for the funny comments.

Best regards,
Pamela

    Hi Pam…loved the story above…sad that so many folks nowadays love to condem other’s when they have no idea what they are talking about… I am continually amazed (and saddened) at how judgemental, critical and intolerant some people are. I haven’t read the comments you reference but I can just imagine how “uninformed” (trying to be nice) they were…! Great response..! Give both your kitties a big kiss on the belly for me! :-)

    We love Beanie! Whenever someone mentions a cat, Vi and Evie mention Beanie, the cutest cat ever.
