The Art Page

I am very fortunate to have a mother who saw my artistic potential when I was very young. My first painting was in the medium of water paints. It was a painting of the cocker spaniel, which lived five houses over from us. His name was “Askhim”. I was four years old when I painted my first “epic” on the back of a Sears winter boot box. Though I took the artistic license of giving him blue eyes – my mother still thought it was brilliant. She put me in art lessons when I turned five.

As a single parent my mom didn’t have much money – though she thought it was important that my sister and I have books to read and classes for creative growth. I’m sure the lovely woman, from our church, gave us a huge discount . Artist Baroness Goodren VonLibra taught my sister and I for just $2.00 each for a two-hour lesson once a week. She was my teacher from the time I was five until I graduated from Junior High at age 14.

The Baroness was a survivor of the Holocaust. She painted the most amazing flowers – her house was filled with beauty. My mother still has one of the late Ms. Von Libra’s Pieces hanging in her home. Mother also still has my first painting of the blue-eyed dog. The few times I asked for it she told me I could have it back when she dies. Frankly – I’d rather she keep the painting and stick around for at least 100 years!

I don’t know if I would have continued to make art if it weren’t for my mother. Just one of the many things she has given me :)
